José Carles

Partner at CARLES | CUESTA and co-chair of the Insolvency Tech & Digital Assets at INSOL Europe

Ex investment banker, chartered economist, lawyer and insolvency receiver, José Carles is a founding partner at Spain-based CARLES | CUESTA, where he leads the business recovery, restructuring and insolvency practice. He is co-chair of INSOL Europe’s legal tech & digital assets wing and joint Editor-in-Chief of INSOL Europe’s insolvency journal Eurofenix.

Mr. Carles is a Fellow of INSOL, Master in Company Law from Centro de Estudios Garrigues and Harvard Law School, BA in Law (ICADE) and BSc in Business Administration (ICADE). He is also the director of Madrid’s Bar association (ICAM) Business Recovery, Restructuring & Insolvency master program, in which he also lectures, and is one of the six members of the advisory committee to the insolvency wing of Madrid’s Bar Association. Since 2013, Mr Carles has been a professor in restructuring and insolvency law at ICADE’s LLM program, Universidad CEU San Pablo or Universidad Villanueva and has been regularly invited as a speaker by international institutions other universities worldwide. He has written over 40 publications on Restructuring & Insolvency Law.

Multilingual, José is a member of international associations such as the American Bankruptcy Institute, INSOL International, INSOL Europe or the International Insolvency Institute. José has been acknowledged as one of the world’s leading professionals in cross-border insolvency and restructuring by the American Bankruptcy Institute (ABI’s 40 under 40 2019) or Global Restructuring Review (GRR 40 under 40 2022) and he was invited to the International Insolvency Institute NextGen Program (Class IX 2020).
