Spanish businesses (small and medium-sized enterprises above all) have traditionally benefited from abundant, accessible, reasonably priced bank financing. This was particularly true during the boom years prior to the global financial crisis and the resulting economic problems and credit crunch in Spain.
According to a study by the European Union’s statistical office, Eurostat, bank loans made up 56% of total financing sought out by European SMEs in 2007 and this percentage rose to 67% in the 2011-2013 period. In Spain, bank borrowings represent around 73% of the total, compared to 45% in France and 31% in the US.¾
